Blunders in Poker That You Should Not Commit
Entitlement is one big word that represents a very old question: Do individuals get what they deserve? Do you think doing the right thing will make you gain great rewards and if you do wrong actions you'll get the punishment you deserve? Maybe this thing will happen in an ideal world. But it is common knowledge that it's not how things work.
If you'll find a wallet full of money and you think that you're going to get an ample reward when you return it, then you're mistaken. Most honest people today didn't get anything aside from a simple thank you from gratified people.
At school, you expect to get better grades on subjects you studied beforehand, and expecting to gain poor results on subjects you're not familiar with. But oftentimes, you'll get ace results on subjects you didn't studied for and passing grades for those you wake the night on.
We assume that hard work can give us some edge at our working place for promotions and salary increase. But the most diligent and deserving people were passed over during promotions, take a cut in their salaries and most unfortunate will get laid off.
The point here is that you think that you're worthy of something from the good actions you made but it is very probable that you'll get an entirely different thing.
One good example of poker entitlement would be Phil Helmuth. He is known for his quote: "If it wasn't for luck, I guess I'd win them all." This player believes that playing solid game play in poker earn him the title of winning every game. But now, his smart enough to know that luck has something to do with how the game ends up. However, there's always something in the belief system of Hellmuth that the best hand should always beat the weak hand.
This way of reasoning blinded Phil on all kinds of variables in poker. One example would be Phil's rant during the 2008 WSOP Main Event against Adam Roothlus Levy. Early in the game and both players are deep stacked: Phil raise with a pair of 9 and Levy called with QTs. As the game progressed, Phil hit a turn but the 9 gave Levy a nut straight; afterwards Phil lose an ample size bet then he rant on Levy and demeans his game. The fact is, Levy played the game smoothly; Phil was just so mad about what happened on his best hand and just permit his sense of entitlement to take over him and make him ignore what's happening around the game.
As mentioned, both players are deep stacked, Levy's in position and Phil has a rep of being a lose player on the table. During his bet on the river he even commented if he can play QT like this and it only means that the range of his hand include QT but yet he still called Levy an idiot for playing the same hand.
If you desire to be a wonderful poker player then its time for you to erase all kind of self entitlement you have. In poker, all you have to do is place your bet in the very best position possible and let fate decides afterwards. There will be times that your good hands will lose and your poor hands will win but in the end all things will balance out.
At the poker table you are only entitled of one thing and that would be to be dealt with cards. Once the cards are dealt everything will rely on your decisions and of course fate. But keep in mind that in the long run your decisions will determine your winning streak and luck will only know when it will be.
